What is the purpose of a drum brake?

Drum brakes are a type of automotive brake that use friction to slow or stop a vehicle. They consist of a brake drum, brake shoes, and an actuating mechanism. The brake drum is attached to the wheel, and the brake shoes are mounted inside the drum. When the brake pedal is depressed, the actuating mechanism forces the brake shoes against the inside of the drum, creating friction that slows or stops the wheel.

Drum brakes are still used on some vehicles, but they are being replaced by disc brakes, which are generally more effective and easier to maintain.
