Here are the steps on how to replace the fuel pump on a 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier:
1. Park the car in a level area and turn off the engine. Allow the car to cool down completely.
2. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
3. Remove the fuel pump access cover. This is located under the rear seat.
4. Remove the fuel lines. There are two fuel lines, one that is connected to the fuel pump inlet and one that is connected to the fuel pump outlet. Use a 17mm wrench to loosen the fuel line nuts. Be careful not to spill any gasoline.
5. Remove the electrical connector. There is one electrical connector that is connected to the fuel pump. Use a flat head screwdriver to release the connector.
6. Remove the fuel pump mounting screws. There are four fuel pump mounting screws. Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the screws.
7. Remove the fuel pump. Once the fuel pump mounting screws are removed, the fuel pump can be removed from the fuel tank.
8. Install the new fuel pump. Place the new fuel pump into the fuel tank. Secure the fuel pump with the four fuel pump mounting screws.
9. Re-install the electrical connector. Connect the electrical connector to the fuel pump.
10. Re-install the fuel lines. Connect the fuel lines to the fuel pump inlet and outlet. Tighten the fuel line nuts with a 17mm wrench.
11. Re-install the fuel pump access cover.
12. Re-connect the negative battery terminal.
13. Start the car and check for leaks.
If there are no leaks, the fuel pump replacement is complete.
