Tools Needed:
- A socket set
- A pliers set
- A 5/8-inch wrench
- A 1/4-inch hex key
- A flat-head screwdriver
- A hammer
- A drain pan
- A funnel
- Gloves
Parts Needed:
- New water pump
- New thermostat (optional)
- New gasket
- Sealant
- Coolant
Instructions:
1. Park your car on a level surface and let it cool down.
2. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down.
3. Engage the parking brake and chock the rear wheels.
4. Open the hood and disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
5. Remove the upper and lower radiator hoses.
6. Remove the fan belt.
7. Remove the four bolts holding the water pump to the engine block.
8. Remove the old gasket from the mating surfaces.
9. Install a new gasket and then install the new water pump.
10. Reinstall the four bolts that hold the water pump to the engine block.
11. Reinstall the fan belt.
12. Reinstall the upper and lower radiator hoses.
13. Add coolant to the radiator and refill the overflow reservoir.
14. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
15. Check for leaks.
Additional Tips:
- If you are also replacing the thermostat, now is the time to do so.
- Apply a thin layer of sealant around the new gasket to help prevent leaks.
- Make sure that all the bolts are tight before running the engine.
Replacing the water pump is a relatively simple process that can be completed in under an hour. By following these instructions, you will be able to safely and easily replace the water pump on your 1992 Pontiac Sunbird.
