Tools Needed:
- Socket wrench
- Flathead and Phillips screwdrivers
- Needle nose pliers
- Pliers
- Brake cleaner
- Brake fluid
- Wrench set
Procedure:
1. Jack up the car. Place the car on jack stands to provide a stable working environment. Block the rear wheels with wheel chocks to prevent accidental rolling.
2. Locate the brake booster and disconnect the vacuum hose. The brake booster is generally mounted on the firewall of the car. Follow the vacuum hose from the engine and disconnect it from the brake booster. Use pliers to loosen the clamp holding the hose.
3. Remove the master cylinder bolts and carefully separate it from the brake booster. Once the master cylinder bolts are removed, be very careful when separating it as brake fluid might drip. Use a flat screwdriver or pry bar to assist in the separation if necessary.
4. Remove the four nuts that hold the brake booster to the firewall. These nuts are located around the perimeter of the brake booster. Use a wrench or socket wrench to loosen and remove them.
5. Remove the brake booster from the car. Once the nuts are removed, the brake booster can be carefully removed by pulling it towards the front of the car.
6. Clean the mounting surface. Take some time to clean the mounting surface where the brake booster sits on the firewall. Remove any dirt, debris, or old gasket residue using a flathead screwdriver or a wire brush.
7. Install the new brake booster. Carefully align the holes on the new brake booster with the mounting studs on the firewall. Thread the nuts into the studs by hand until all of them are started. Then use a wrench or socket wrench to tighten them securely in place.
8. Reconnect the master cylinder to the brake booster. Position the master cylinder back onto the brake booster ensuring it aligns correctly. Insert the bolts that were removed earlier and tighten them securely.
9. Connect the vacuum hose. Reattach the vacuum hose that you removed in step 2 to the brake booster. Use pliers to tighten the clamp.
10. Bleed the brakes. Once the brake booster is installed, it's important to bleed the brakes to remove any air that might have entered the brake lines during the process. Bleeding the brakes involves opening specific bleed screws on the brake calipers or wheel cylinders and allowing the air to escape while adding new brake fluid. This step is crucial for proper brake function and safety.
11. Test the brakes. Once the brakes are bled, test the brakes by pressing the brake pedal firmly and make sure it provides adequate resistance and stops the car effectively.
Note: Replacing a brake booster can be a complex task, and it's recommended to consult a professional mechanic if you are not confident in your ability to perform the task correctly. Incorrectly installed brake components can compromise the safety of the vehicle.
