Our 2004 Avalon has a very jerky shifting action. When we bought it the RPMs were running high and that was fixed but is not smooth.?

1.Low Transmission Fluid: Check the transmission fluid level and condition. If the fluid is low, add the recommended fluid as per the manufacturer's specifications. If the fluid is dirty or dark, it should be flushed and replaced.

2.Faulty Shift Solenoids: Shift solenoids control the flow of transmission fluid to engage different gears. A faulty solenoid can cause harsh shifting or jerky behavior. Have the solenoids tested and replaced if necessary.

3.Faulty Torque Converter: The torque converter is responsible for transmitting power from the engine to the transmission. A faulty torque converter can cause vibrations and harsh shifting. It might need to be inspected and replaced if damaged.

4.Transmission Control Module (TCM) Issues: The TCM is the electronic control unit responsible for managing the transmission's operations. A faulty or malfunctioning TCM can cause jerky shifting. Have the TCM diagnosed and reprogrammed or replaced if necessary.

5.Mechanical Issues: Worn or damaged internal components such as clutches, bands, or synchronizers can lead to jerky shifting. A transmission specialist should inspect the transmission internally to identify and repair any such issues.

To ensure an accurate diagnosis and proper repair, it's best to have a qualified mechanic or transmission specialist inspect and service the vehicle.
