Important Note: Always refer to the service manual for your vehicle for the most accurate and detailed instructions.
Tools Needed:
- Metric wrench set
- Socket wrench set
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Flathead screwdriver
- Torque wrench
- 19 mm spark plug wrench
- Timing light
- Engine coolant (50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water)
- Oil filter wrench
- Oil filter (if needed)
Parts Needed:
- New timing belt kit (timing belt, tensioner, and idler pulley)
- New water pump (if needed)
- New oil pump (if needed)
Instructions:
1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
2. Allow the engine to cool completely and disconnect the battery negative cable.
3. Drain the engine coolant by opening the drain cock on the bottom of the radiator or by disconnecting the lower radiator hose.
4. Remove the upper timing cover by removing the bolts holding it in place.
5. Use a 19 mm spark plug wrench to rotate the crankshaft until the timing mark on the camshaft sprocket aligns with the timing mark on the cylinder head.
6. Check that the timing marks on the crankshaft sprocket and the oil pump sprocket are also aligned.
7. If the timing marks are not aligned, use a wrench to loosen the camshaft sprocket bolt and turn the camshaft sprocket until the timing marks align. Tighten the bolt securely once the marks are aligned.
8. If the timing marks on the crankshaft and oil pump sprockets are not aligned, use a wrench to loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt and turn the crankshaft until the marks are aligned. Tighten the bolt securely once the marks are aligned.
9. Install the new timing belt by wrapping it around the crankshaft, camshaft, and oil pump sprockets.
10. Tension the timing belt by using a torque wrench to tighten the tensioner pulley bolt to the specifications in the service manual.
11. Install the new idler pulley, if necessary.
12. Replace the upper timing cover and fill the radiator with engine coolant.
13. If you removed the lower radiator hose, reconnect it now.
14. If you changed the oil pump or the water pump, fill the engine with the correct amount and correct type of engine oil and coolant accordingly.
15. Connect the battery negative cable.
16. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes to check that there are no leaks or unusual noises.
17. Recheck that timing marks are still aligned.
18. Make any final adjustments if needed.
Note: It is highly recommended to have a qualified mechanic perform this task if you are not comfortable working on your vehicle's engine. Incorrect timing can cause severe engine damage.
