How do you change the upper brake light on your 2003 highlander?

1. Park your Highlander in a safe location and turn off the engine. Engage the parking brake with the gearshift in park.

2. Open the rear hatch of your Highlander.

3. Locate the brake light assembly on the rear hatch. It is located in the center, just below the rear window.

4. Remove the two screws holding the brake light assembly in place. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to do this.

5. Once the screws are removed, lift up and remove the brake light assembly from the hatch. Be careful not to drop the assembly.

6. Gently disconnect the electrical connector on the back of the brake light assembly . There is a tab that you press to release the electrical connector.

7. Remove the old brake light bulb from the assembly. Twist the bulb counterclockwise until it is released from the socket. Be careful not to touch the bulb with your fingers, as the oil from your skin can shorten the life of the bulb.

8. Insert the new brake light bulb into the socket. Twist the bulb clockwise until it is secure.

9. Reconnect the electrical connector to the brake light assembly. Press the tab on the connector to secure it.

10. Reinstall the brake light assembly on the rear hatch. Insert the two screws and tighten them until they are secure.

11. Test the brake lights to make sure they are working properly. Press the brake pedal and check to make sure that both of the brake lights illuminate.

12. Close the rear hatch of your Highlander.
