1. Make sure that the problem that caused the check engine light to come on has been resolved. If the light is on due to a loose gas cap, for example, tightening the cap should clear the light.
2. Disconnect the negative battery terminal. This will reset the computer and clear the check engine light.
3. Wait at least 10 seconds before reconnecting the battery terminal. This will give the computer time to reset.
4. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. The check engine light should now be off.
If the check engine light does not go off after following these steps, you may need to take your car to a mechanic to have it diagnosed.
