Materials:
- Replacement fuel pump
- Fuel line connector toolset (if needed)
- Fuel filter (optional, recommended for replacement since the fuel pump is being accessed)
Step-by-step guide:
1. Prepare the vehicle.
- Park the Previa on level ground and turn off the engine.
- Engage the parking brake.
- Relieve the fuel system pressure by removing the fuel cap.
2. Locate the fuel pump.
- The fuel pump for the 1991 Previa is located under the vehicle, near the fuel tank.
- You might need to raise the vehicle using ramps or a jack and use jack stands to safely access the underside of the vehicle.
3. Disconnect the battery.
- To prevent any sparks or electrical hazards, disconnect the negative terminal of the vehicle's battery.
4. Remove the fuel pump access cover.
- Look for the fuel pump access cover underneath the vehicle, near the fuel tank.
- Remove the screws or bolts holding it in place.
5. Disconnect the fuel lines.
- There will be two fuel lines connected to the pump - the supply line and the return line.
- Use the fuel line connector tool (or a combination of pliers and a flat-head screwdriver) to disconnect these lines.
- Be ready to catch any spilled fuel (have a drip pan ready).
6. Disconnect the fuel pump's electrical connector.
- Locate the electrical connector that provides power to the fuel pump.
- Disconnect it by pressing the lock tab and pulling the connector apart.
7. Remove the fuel pump mounting bolts or screws.
- Typically, there will be bolts or screws holding the fuel pump in place.
- Remove them to loosen the pump.
8. Take out the old fuel pump.
- Lower the fuel pump and take it out from underneath the vehicle.
- Be cautious as it might still contain fuel.
9. Inspect and replace the fuel filter (optional).
- If desired, this is an opportune moment to replace the fuel filter since you're already accessing the fuel pump area.
10. Install the new fuel pump.
- Fit the new fuel pump into its mounting location.
- Secure the new fuel pump with the mounting bolts or screws.
11. Reconnect the fuel lines.
- Reattach the fuel lines to the pump.
- Ensure that the connections are secure to avoid fuel leaks.
12. Reconnect the electrical connector.
- Reconnect the electrical connector that provides power to the pump.
13. Reinstall the fuel pump access cover.
- Reinstall any covers that were removed to access the fuel pump.
- Make sure the cover is secured properly.
14. Reconnect the battery.
- Reattach the negative terminal of the vehicle's battery.
15. Test the fuel pump.
- Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position (don't start the engine yet).
- Listen for the fuel pump to run for a few seconds and create pressure in the fuel lines.
- If the pump doesn't run, check the connections and wiring.
16. Start the engine and test drive the vehicle.
- Once you've confirmed the fuel pump is functioning properly, start the engine.
- Take the vehicle for a short drive to ensure everything is working correctly.
Note:
- Consult a trusted mechanic or refer to a Haynes or Chilton repair manual for your vehicle if you're not comfortable performing these steps on your own. Working with fuel systems can be potentially hazardous, so proceed cautiously.
