1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the serpentine belt.
3. Drain the power steering fluid.
4. Disconnect the pressure and return lines from the pump.
5. Unbolt the pump from the engine block.
6. Install the new pump in reverse order of removal.
7. Fill the power steering fluid reservoir and bleed the system.
8. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
Here are detailed instructions for each step:
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
This will help to prevent any electrical shock while you are working on the power steering pump.
Remove the serpentine belt.
The serpentine belt drives the power steering pump, so you will need to remove it in order to access the pump. To remove the serpentine belt, use a wrench to loosen the tensioner pulley and then slip the belt off of the pulleys.
Drain the power steering fluid.
The power steering fluid is a hydraulic fluid that helps to lubricate the power steering pump and steering rack. You will need to drain the power steering fluid from the system before you can remove the pump. To drain the power steering fluid, place a drain pan under the power steering pump and then disconnect the return line from the pump. Allow all of the fluid to drain from the system.
Disconnect the pressure and return lines from the pump.
The pressure and return lines are the two hoses that connect the power steering pump to the steering rack. To disconnect the pressure and return lines, use a wrench to loosen the hose clamps and then pull the hoses off of the pump.
Unbolt the pump from the engine block.
The power steering pump is bolted to the engine block with four bolts. Use a wrench to loosen the four bolts and then remove the pump from the engine block.
Install the new pump in reverse order of removal.
To install the new power steering pump, simply follow the steps that you took to remove the old pump in reverse order.
Fill the power steering fluid reservoir and bleed the system.
Once the new pump is installed, you will need to fill the power steering fluid reservoir and bleed the system. To fill the power steering fluid reservoir, simply pour the fluid into the reservoir until it is full. To bleed the system, start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times. This will help to remove any air from the system.
Reconnect the negative battery cable.
Once the power steering system is bled, you can reconnect the negative battery cable.
