1. Safety Precautions:
- Ensure the engine is cool before you begin.
- Disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent accidental engine starting.
2. Tools Needed:
- Feeler gauge
- Wrench set
- Flat-head screwdriver
3. Locate the Valve Covers:
- Identify the valve covers on the engine. There will be two valve covers, one for the intake valve and one for the exhaust valve.
4. Remove the Valve Covers:
- Use a wrench to loosen and remove the bolts or screws holding the valve covers in place.
- Carefully remove the valve covers. Be cautious not to drop any components or debris into the engine.
5. Check Valve Clearance:
- Insert the appropriate size feeler gauge between the valve stem and the rocker arm for each valve (generally, the specified clearance is provided in the engine manual).
- Check with the pushrod of the valve is fully seated when measuring.
6. Adjust the Valves (if Necessary):
- If the clearance is too tight or too loose, you will need to adjust the valve.
- Loosen the locknut on the valve rocker arm.
- Turn the adjusting screw on the rocker arm until you achieve the specified clearance.
- Retighten the locknut.
7. Repeat for the Other Valve:
- Follow steps 5 and 6 to check and adjust the clearance for the other valve (intake or exhaust).
8. Reinstall the Valve Covers:
- Carefully place the valve covers back on the engine.
- Secure them using the bolts or screws you removed earlier.
- Ensure the covers are properly seated to prevent leaks.
9. Reconnect the Spark Plug Wire:
- Reconnect the spark plug wire to the spark plug.
10. Test the Engine:
- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
- Listen for any unusual noises or vibrations that may indicate improper valve adjustment.
Remember to refer to the specific Briggs and Stratton engine manual for your Murray riding mower for exact specifications and instructions related to valve adjustment.
