What and where is a catalytic converter on car?

What is a catalytic converter?

A catalytic converter is a device that reduces harmful pollutants in the exhaust gas of internal combustion engines. It transforms harmful pollutants such as carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides, into less harmful substances such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and water vapour.

Where is the catalytic converter located?

The catalytic converter is usually located in the exhaust system of cars, close to the engine, where it can quickly reach its operating temperature. It sits underneath or near the vehicle, within the exhaust system. Cars often have one catalytic converter, while certain vehicles, especially those with larger engines, might have two or more catalytic converters.
