What do the first three numbers on a tire mean?

The first three numbers printed on the side of a tire are the tire width in millimeters from sidewall to sidewall. For example, a marking such as "235/60 R16" means the tire is 235 mm wide.

The larger the number, the wider the tire. Wider tires provide more traction, stability, and handling, but they can also increase fuel consumption and noise.
