1. Gather Materials:
- New oil filter (check your owner's manual for the correct size)
- New oil (check your owner's manual for the correct type and amount; a funnel is optional but recommended)
- Oil drain pan or a large container to catch the old oil
- Wrench
- Rags
- Gloves
2. Prepare Your Car:
- Park your car on a level surface.
- Engage the parking brake.
- Allow the engine to cool down if it's hot.
- Raise your vehicle using ramps, a jack, and jack stands (never rely on the jack alone).
- Locate the oil drain plug, which is usually near the bottom of the oil pan.
3. Drain the Oil:
- Place the oil drain pan beneath the oil drain plug.
- Use the wrench to loosen and remove the oil drain plug. Be careful as the oil may be hot.
- Allow the oil to drain completely. This may take several minutes.
4. Replace the Oil Drain Plug:
- Once the oil has drained, clean the oil drain plug and the surrounding area to remove any dirt or debris.
- Reinsert the oil drain plug and tighten it securely using the wrench.
5. Locate the Oil Filter:
- The oil filter is usually cylindrical and near the top of the engine.
6. Remove the Oil Filter:
- Use the wrench to loosen the oil filter. Be careful as there may be some residual oil.
- Remove the oil filter and discard it properly.
- Clean the filter mounting surface.
7. Apply a Thin Coat of New Oil to the New Oil Filter Gasket:
- This helps create a seal and prevents leaks.
8. Screw on the New Oil Filter:
- Hand-tighten the oil filter until it's snug. Do not over-tighten it.
9. Remove the Engine Oil Cap:
- This allows air to get in, helping the oil drain from the engine more easily.
10. Add New Oil:
- Using the funnel (if desired), pour the new oil into the engine through the oil fill port.
- Add the amount of oil specified in your owner's manual.
- Check the oil level using the dipstick. The oil level should be between the "full" and "add" marks on the dipstick.
11. Start the Engine Briefly:
- Start the engine and let it run for a few seconds. This helps circulate the new oil.
- Turn off the engine and check for any leaks.
12. Re-check the Oil Level:
- Wait a few minutes for the oil to settle and then re-check the oil level. Adjust if needed.
13. Dispose of the Old Oil and Filter Properly:
- Place the old oil and filter in a sealed container and dispose of them according to local regulations.
Remember, if you're not comfortable performing this task, you can always take your car to a reputable mechanic or automotive service center.
