Tools and Materials:
- 19mm box wrench
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Pry bar
- 3-jaw puller
- Hammer
Procedure:
1. Prepare the Vehicle: Park the vehicle on a level surface, apply the parking brake, and chock the wheels. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down completely. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Locate the Crankshaft Sprocket: The crankshaft sprocket is located at the front of the engine, just behind the timing belt cover. It is a large, toothed gear that is attached to the crankshaft.
3. Pry off the Timing Belt Cover: Use a flat-head screwdriver or pry bar to gently pry off the timing belt cover. Be careful not to damage the cover or the timing belt.
4. Remove the Timing Belt: If the timing belt is still installed, remove it by loosening the tensioner pulley and sliding the belt off the sprockets.
5. Insert the Puller: Place the 3-jaw puller onto the crankshaft sprocket, ensuring that the jaws are properly seated against the sprocket. Tighten the puller's center bolt until the jaws are firmly gripping the sprocket.
6. Apply Pressure: Use the hammer to tap on the puller's center bolt, applying gentle force to break the sprocket free from the crankshaft.
7. Continue Tapping: Continue tapping on the center bolt until the sprocket loosens and comes off the crankshaft. Be patient and apply force gradually to avoid damaging the sprocket or the crankshaft.
8. Remove the Puller: Once the sprocket is loose, use the wrench to loosen and remove the puller.
9. Inspect and Replace: Inspect the crankshaft sprocket for any damage or wear. If necessary, replace the sprocket with a new one.
10. Reassemble: Reinstall the timing belt (if removed), the timing belt cover, and reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
Note: If the crankshaft sprocket is particularly stubborn and does not come off easily, you may need to use a stronger puller or a hydraulic press to remove it. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for the puller or press to avoid causing any damage.
