1. Locate the distributor cap on the engine. It is usually located at the front of the engine, near the top.
2. Remove the distributor cap by turning it counterclockwise.
3. Inside the distributor cap, you will see the rotor. The rotor is a small, cylindrical piece of metal with a spring-loaded contact on one end.
4. The rotor position is determined by the position of the contact on the rotor. The contact should be pointing towards the terminal on the distributor cap that is marked with the number "1".
5. If the rotor is not pointing towards the number "1" terminal, you will need to adjust it. To do this, use a small screwdriver to pry the rotor up off of the distributor shaft. Be careful not to damage the rotor or the shaft.
6. Once the rotor is loose, you can rotate it to the correct position. Make sure that the contact is pointing towards the number "1" terminal.
7. Once the rotor is in the correct position, press it down onto the distributor shaft until it clicks into place.
8. Replace the distributor cap and tighten it down securely.
