How do you set timing on 2y engine?

Timing a Ford 2Y Engine

The Ford 2Y is a 2.0L SOHC engine that was produced from 1978 to 1981. It was used in a number of Ford vehicles, including the Mustang, Fairmont, and Granada. To set the timing on a 2Y engine, you will need the following tools:

- A timing light

- A 1/2-inch drive ratchet

- A 13mm socket

- A 15mm socket

- A 17mm socket

- A flat-blade screwdriver

Instructions

1. Locate the timing marks on the engine. The timing marks are located on the crankshaft pulley and the timing chain cover. The crankshaft pulley has a single mark, while the timing chain cover has two marks. The top mark on the timing chain cover is for TDC (top dead center), while the bottom mark is for 6° BTC (before top center).

2. Disconnect the vacuum advance line from the distributor. This will prevent the timing from advancing when you start the engine.

3. Connect the timing light to the battery and the number one spark plug wire.

4. Start the engine and let it idle.

5. Point the timing light at the timing marks. The light will flash when the number one piston is at TDC.

6. If the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley does not line up with the top mark on the timing chain cover, you will need to adjust the timing. To do this, loosen the 13mm bolt on the distributor and turn the distributor clockwise to retard the timing or counterclockwise to advance it.

7. Once the timing is set correctly, tighten the 13mm bolt on the distributor.

8. Reconnect the vacuum advance line to the distributor.

Tips:

* If the engine is running rough or has a lack of power, the timing may be off.

* It is a good idea to check the timing every 10,000 miles or so to ensure that it is still set correctly.

* If you have any doubts about how to set the timing, it is best to consult a qualified mechanic.
