Can an engine be timed without a timing light?

Yes, an engine can be timed without a timing light. Here's how:

1. Locate the timing marks on the engine. These are usually found on the flywheel or harmonic balancer and the engine block.

2. Remove the spark plug wires from the spark plugs.

3. Hand-crank the engine until the piston in the first cylinder is at the top of the compression stroke. This can be determined by feeling for compression in the cylinder.

4. Insert a timing pin or rod into the spark plug hole of the first cylinder.

5. Turn the crankshaft slowly until the timing pin or rod just begins to move out of the hole.

6. Align the timing marks on the engine.

7. Tighten the spark plug wires back into place.

8. Start the engine and check the timing with a timing light. If necessary, make small adjustments to the timing until it is correct.
