Tools and Materials needed:
- Socket Set
- Wrench Set
- Timing Light
- Timing Tape
Step 1: Locate Timing Marks
- Turn the crankshaft so that the timing mark on the harmonic balancer is aligned with the 0-degree mark on the timing tab.
- Turn the camshaft so that the dot on the camshaft gear is aligned with the 12 o'clock position.
Step 2: Install the Timing Chain
- Slide the timing chain over the crankshaft and camshaft gears, making sure that the links of the chain are engaged with the teeth of both gears.
- Pull the timing chain tight by hand so that there is no slack.
Step 3: Install the Timing Cover
- Reinstall the timing cover and tighten the bolts.
Step 4: Adjust the Timing
- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
- Using a timing light, point it at the timing mark on the harmonic balancer. The timing mark should now be aligned with the desired degree mark on the timing tab.
Step 5: Secure the Timing
- If the timing is off, rotate the distributor housing to adjust it. Continue to adjust the distributor until the timing mark is aligned with the desired degree mark on the timing tab.
- Once the timing is correct, tighten the distributor hold-down bolt to secure it in place. Turn off the engine.
