What is the speed awareness scheme?

The speed awareness scheme is a voluntary educational course offered to drivers who have been caught speeding. The scheme aims to educate drivers about the dangers of speeding and to encourage them to drive more safely in the future.

Speed awareness courses typically last for around three hours and cover topics such as the following:

* The dangers of speeding

* The law on speeding

* The consequences of speeding

* How to drive more safely

Drivers who successfully complete a speed awareness course will not be fined or have points added to their driving licence. However, they may still be required to pay a fee to attend the course.

The speed awareness scheme is not available to all drivers who are caught speeding. For example, drivers who have been caught speeding multiple times or who have been involved in a serious road traffic accident are not eligible for the scheme.

The scheme is voluntary, which means drivers can choose whether to take part or not.

According to the Government website:

"Speed awareness courses are available in most areas in England, Scotland and Wales. You can find out if there's a course in your area, and how to apply for one, by contacting your local police force."

In Scotland, the scheme is called the "Safe Driving Scheme" and is available in all areas of the country. Drivers who successfully complete the Safe Driving Scheme will not be fined or have points added to their licence, and will also receive a refund of the fixed penalty fee they paid.
