-Timing light
-Wrench set
-Feeler gauge
-Cleaning solvent
-Wire brush
Here are the steps to follow:
Note: 1.46 degrees before TDC at 1,000 RPM.
1. Locate the distributor cap on the front of the engine. It is a black plastic cover with a spark plug wire attached to each side.
2. Use the wrench to loosen the two bolts holding the distributor cap in place. Remove the cap.
3. Use the cleaning solvent and wire brush to clean inside of the distributor.
4. Once the distributor is clean, use the feeler gauge to check the gap between the distributor points and the armature. Ensure the gap between the points and the rotor tip is .016 inches.
5. Use the wrench to loosen the distributor hold-down bolt. Turn the distributor clockwise or counterclockwise until the timing light indicates that the timing is at 1.46 degrees before top dead center (BTDC) at 1,000 RPM.
6. Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt.
7. Replace the distributor cap and secure it with the two bolts.
8. Start the engine and check the timing again. Ensure that it remains at 1.46 degrees BTDC at 1,000 RPM.
