What is best oil to use in a Volkswagen Type 1 engine?

SAE 20W-50 is the recommended engine oil for a Volkswagen Type 1 engine. This viscosity grade provides the best combination of protection and performance for the air-cooled engine. In colder climates, SAE 10W-40 or even 5W-40 may be used, but 20W-50 is still the preferred choice.
