Why are some Subaru vehicles in the US have steering wheels that on other side?

Some Subaru vehicles in the US have right-hand drive (steering wheel on the right) because they are imported used cars from countries where right-hand drive is standard. Many countries in the world, including the UK, Japan, Australia, and others, drive on the left side of the road and therefore have right-hand drive vehicles. These vehicles are sometimes imported into the US, though their numbers are relatively small compared to the number of left-hand drive Subarus sold new here. It's legal to import and register them, but they require significant modifications to meet US safety and emissions standards.
