1. Disconnect the spark plug wires.
2. Remove the distributor cap.
3. Remove the No. 1 spark plug.
4. Insert a finger into the spark plug hole to feel the piston coming to the top.
5. While holding your finger in the hole, turn the crankshaft clockwise slowly until the piston starts to compress your finger. Have someone hold the balancer at this point.
6. Align the timing marks on the balancer and the timing scale.
Distributor body scale
1. Disconnect the spark plug wires.
2. Remove the distributor cap.
3. Clean the distributor body and housing where they mount together with a wire brush, being sure to remove any oil, dirt, or rust
4. Remove the distributor from the engine.
5. Place a straight edge that spans one-half the crankshaft.
6. Turn the crankshaft so that the straight edge is parallel with the engine bores and is directly over the number one piston (the cylinder nearest the radiator), and at the top of its compression stroke.
7. Align the timing marks on the distributor body and housing.
8. Install the distributor in the engine.
9. Install the cap and spark plug wires.
