- Funnel
- Screwdriver
- Phillips-head screwdriver
- Long-neck pliers
- Bucket or drain pan
- Rags
- Gloves
- Safety glasses
Step 1: Prepare the Car
- Park your BMW X3 on a level surface and allow the engine to cool down completely.
- Engage the parking brake and open the hood.
Step 2: Locate the Drain Cock
- The drain plug is located at the bottom of the radiator.
Step 3: Drain the Coolant
- Place a bucket or drain pan under the radiator to catch the coolant.
- Use a screwdriver to carefully pry off the cap on the drain cock.
- Allow all the coolant to drain out of the radiator and reservoir.
- Ensure all of the coolant has been drained by squeezing the radiator hoses and inspecting for any remaining fluid.
Step 4: Close the Drain Cock
- Once all the coolant has drained, replace the cap on the drain cock and tighten it securely.
Step 5: Remove the Expansion Tank Cap
- Locate the expansion tank on the passenger side of the engine bay.
- Carefully twist off the cap on the expansion tank.
Step 6: Fill the Radiator
- Use a funnel to pour new coolant into the radiator until it reaches the "Max" or "Full" mark.
Step 7: Fill the Expansion Tank
- Continue pouring coolant into the expansion tank until it reaches the "Max" or "Full" mark.
Step 8: Start the Engine and bleed the system
- Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes with the heater set to high.
- Check the coolant level in the expansion tank and add more if necessary.
- Squeeze the radiator hoses to release any trapped air bubbles.
- Turn the engine off and let it cool down.
Step 9: Check the Coolant Level
- Once the engine has cooled down, check the coolant level in the expansion tank again and top it off if needed.
Step 10: Replace the Expansion Tank Cap
- Screw the expansion tank cap back on securely.
Step 11: Dispose of the Old Coolant
- Dispose of the old coolant responsibly at a local recycling center or hazardous waste facility.
Step 12: Test Drive
- Take your BMW X3 for a short drive and check for any leaks.
Remember: Be sure to follow the BMW-recommended coolant type and dilution ratio specified in your vehicle's owner's manual. Changing the coolant regularly is essential for maintaining your vehicle's cooling system and preventing costly repairs in the future.
