A screwdriver
A socket wrench and extension
A spark plug wrench
A feeler gauge
1. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Remove the distributor cap.
3. Find the timing marks on the engine. They are located on the front cover and the harmonic balancer. The timing mark on the front cover is a vertical line, and the timing mark on the harmonic balancer is a small notch.
4. Turn the engine clockwise until the timing mark on the front cover is aligned with the notch on the harmonic balancer.
5. Insert the feeler gauge between the distributor rotor and the distributor housing. The feeler gauge should measure .035 inches.
6. Loosen the distributor hold-down bolt and turn the distributor clockwise until the feeler gauge is snug.
7. Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt.
8. Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
9. Start the engine and check the timing with a timing light. The timing should be set to 0 degrees.
If the timing is not correct, repeat steps 4-8 until the timing is set correctly.
