1. Remove the valve cover.
- Disconnect the spark plug wires and remove the spark plugs.
- Remove the bolts that hold the valve cover in place and lift off the valve cover.
2. Locate the valves.
- The intake valves are located on the left side of the cylinder head, and the exhaust valves are located on the right side.
3. Check the valve clearances.
- Use a feeler gauge to check the clearance between the valve stem and the rocker arm. The clearance should be between 0.002 and 0.004 inches (0.05 and 0.10 mm).
4. Adjust the valve clearances.
- If the valve clearance is too small, you will need to loosen the locknut on the rocker arm and turn the adjusting screw clockwise until the desired clearance is achieved.
- If the valve clearance is too large, you will need to loosen the locknut on the rocker arm and turn the adjusting screw counterclockwise until the desired clearance is achieved.
5. Reinstall the valve cover.
- Replace the valve cover gasket, if necessary.
- Reinstall the bolts that hold the valve cover in place.
- Reconnect the spark plug wires and reinstall the spark plugs.
6. Start the engine and check for proper valve operation.
- Listen for any unusual noises coming from the engine.
- If you hear any unusual noises, you may need to readjust the valve clearances.
