How do you change oil filter Honda 400ex?

To replace the oil filter in a Honda 400EX ATV, follow these steps:

1. Gather the necessary tools and parts:

- New oil filter (Honda part number 15410-HM5-A01)

- 17 mm wrench

- Oil drain pan

- Funnel

- New engine oil (400 cc or 13.5 fl. oz. of 10W-40 motorcycle oil)

- Shop towels or rags

2. Warm up the engine:

- Start the engine of your Honda 400EX and let it run for a few minutes. This will warm up the oil and make it easier to drain.

3. Locate the oil filter:

- The oil filter is located underneath the engine, on the left side. It is a cylindrical-shaped object with a black cap.

4. Place the oil drain pan:

- Position the oil drain pan directly underneath the oil filter. Make sure the pan is large enough to catch all the oil that will drain out.

5. Remove the oil filter cap:

- Use the 17 mm wrench to loosen and remove the oil filter cap. Be careful, as some oil may leak out when the cap is removed.

6. Remove the old oil filter:

- Once the cap is removed, take out the old oil filter. Be careful not to spill any oil.

7. Inspect the old oil filter:

- Check the old oil filter for any signs of damage or debris. If the filter is clogged or damaged, it's important to replace it.

8. Apply a thin coat of new oil to the new filter:

- Before installing the new oil filter, apply a thin coat of new oil to the gasket of the filter. This will help create a seal and prevent leaks.

9. Screw in the new oil filter:

- Screw in the new oil filter by hand until it is snug. Do not overtighten the filter, as this can damage the threads.

10. Replace the oil filter cap:

- Replace the oil filter cap and tighten it securely with the 17 mm wrench.

11. Add new engine oil:

- Use the funnel to add new engine oil to the engine. Add the specified amount of oil (400 cc or 13.5 fl. oz.)

12. Check the oil level:

- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Then, turn off the engine and check the oil level using the dipstick. The oil level should be between the "full" and "add" marks on the dipstick.

13. Test ride:

- Take your ATV for a short test ride to ensure that there are no leaks and the oil level is correct.

14. Monitor the oil level:

- Regularly check the oil level in your Honda 400EX and add more oil if necessary. Changing the oil filter and oil regularly is essential for maintaining the health and performance of your ATV.
