- 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
- 1/2-inch ratchet and socket set
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Small pry bar
- Bungee cord
Safety First:
Before starting any work, ensure the motorcycle is parked on a level surface and the ignition is turned off. Disconnect the battery to eliminate any risk of electrical shock.
1. Prepare the Bike:
- Remove the seat and gas tank of your Fat Boy to access the starter.
2. Locate the Starter:
- The starter is located on the left side of the engine, just behind the cylinder head.
3. Disconnect Battery Cables:
- Use the 1/2-inch socket set to loosen and remove the positive (red) and negative (black) battery cables connected to the starter solenoid.
4. Remove Solenoid Wires:
- Disconnect the small wires connected to the starter solenoid using a screwdriver and/or pliers.
5. Remove Starter Bolts:
- Use the 3/8-inch socket set to remove the two bolts holding the starter to the engine case.
6. Remove Starter:
- Use a flat-head screwdriver or a pry bar to carefully pry the starter away from the engine case. Be mindful of the starter's weight as you lift it out.
7. Remove Gasket:
- Remove the old gasket from the engine case.
8. Clean Surfaces:
- Clean the mating surfaces of the engine case and the starter to ensure a proper seal.
9. Install New Gasket:
- Place a new gasket onto the engine case. Ensure it is seated correctly.
10. Insert Starter:
- Carefully insert the starter into position. Align the bolt holes of the starter with those on the engine case.
11. Secure Starter Bolts:
- Replace and tighten the two starter bolts using the 3/8-inch socket set.
12. Reattach Solenoid Wires:
- Reconnect the small wires to the starter solenoid.
13. Reconnected Battery Cables:
- Reconnect the positive and negative battery cables to the starter solenoid using the 1/2-inch socket set.
14. Test Starter:
- Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position and press the starter button to ensure it engages and disengages properly.
15. Reinstall Gas Tank and Seat:
- Replace the gas tank and seat of your Fat Boy.
16. Secure Loose Parts:
- Ensure that all bolts, screws, and cables are securely fastened.
