- New fork oil (recommended viscosity: SAE 10W)
- Funnel
- Measuring cup
- 5mm Allen wrench
- 17mm wrench
- Flat-blade screwdriver
- Safety glasses
- Shop rags
Steps:
1. Prepare the motorcycle.
- Park the motorcycle on a level surface.
- Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down.
- Place a drip pan under the front forks to catch any oil that may spill.
2. Remove the front wheel.
- Loosen the axle nut on the left side of the front wheel.
- Remove the axle nut and washer.
- Slide the front wheel off the axle.
3. Remove the fork caps.
- Use a 5mm Allen wrench to loosen the fork caps.
- Remove the fork caps.
4. Drain the old fork oil.
- Place a measuring cup under the left fork tube.
- Tip the motorcycle to the right to drain the old fork oil from the left tube.
- Measure the amount of oil that came out of the left fork tube.
- Repeat steps 4-5 for the right fork tube.
5. Refill the fork tubes with new oil.
- Use a funnel to add the recommended amount of new fork oil to each fork tube.
- The recommended amount of oil is typically around 13-15 ounces per fork tube.
- Make sure to add the same amount of oil to each fork tube.
6. Replace the fork caps.
- Thread the fork caps back on to the fork tubes.
- Tighten the fork caps with a 5mm Allen wrench.
7. Reinstall the front wheel.
- Slide the front wheel onto the axle.
- Replace the axle nut and washer.
- Tighten the axle nut with a 17mm wrench.
8. Test the forks.
- Press down on the front forks several times to check for proper damping.
- The forks should move up and down smoothly without any binding.
9. Clean up.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to remove any excess oil from around the fork seals.
- Wipe the forks clean with a shop rag.
