1. Locate the exterior handle: It's on the outside of the rear door, usually near the trailing edge.
2. Pull the handle: Pull the handle firmly to release the latch.
3. Open the door: Push the door outward to open it.
If the door won't open, there could be several reasons:
* Child safety lock: Check for a child safety lock mechanism on the door itself or on the inside of the front door. This often involves a small button or lever that needs to be disengaged.
* Door latch malfunction: The latch mechanism itself might be broken or jammed. This requires repair or replacement.
* Frozen mechanism (in cold weather): If it's cold, try using de-icer spray on the latch mechanism.
* Electrical issue (power locks): If the Cherokee has power locks and the rear door is not responding, check the power lock system fuses and switches. The problem might be with the central locking mechanism.
If you've tried these and the door still won't open, you may need professional help from a mechanic or locksmith.
