How do you turn off the part time four wheel drive on my jeep liberty?

The Jeep Liberty (KJ) doesn't have a "part-time" four-wheel drive system in the traditional sense like some other Jeeps. It uses a full-time system, meaning all four wheels are always engaged, but power is distributed differently depending on the selected mode. There's no switch to turn 4WD *off* completely.

The Jeep Liberty KJ has a control dial (usually near the shift lever) with settings like:

* 2WD (or Auto): This is the closest thing to "off" for 4WD. In this mode, the system primarily drives the rear wheels, engaging the front wheels only when needed for traction. It's not a true 2WD disconnect.

* 4WD Full-Time: This engages the front and rear axles for improved traction in slippery conditions.

* 4WD Low: This provides a lower gear ratio for extreme off-road situations.

Therefore, to get the closest experience to "turning off" 4WD, you select 2WD (or Auto). Keep in mind, even in this mode, the front wheels may still engage briefly if the system detects wheel slippage.
