  3. With the window button being pressed, open the car door and try slamming the door shut. If this doesn’t work the first time, you can keep trying a few more times. This is meant to try and get the motor located in the door to get freed up.
  4. If the window still won’t roll up close the door. Look at the door and see if there is an obstruction on the door. If you see an obstruction and hit the spot with a blunt object or your hand. Be careful to not harm yourself.

How To Get Window Back in Track?

If the window is making a grinding sound when you try and roll up the window and you can hear the motor running. Then there is a problem with the regulator or the window may have come out of the tracks in the door. Try the process below to help:

  1. Turn the ignition key to the accessory position.
  2. Press and hold the window button to try and close the window. If the window comes up a little bit but still isn’t closed and you can hear the motor trying, stop.
  3. With the door open, put your hands on the window and try and pull up on the window. In this step, you might need a helper.
  4. With your helper have them try and press the window switch.

You may need to grip the window with enough face to pull up and down. If you have to do this, be aware that the window might suddenly start moving. Be careful and don’t get your hands stuck in the window.

What Can Cause Electric Windows to Fail?

There are a few things that can cause power windows to fail. They are blown fuses, bad switches, and burned-out motors. It’s possible for the window regulators to wear out, bend, or get stuck. These are less common.

Some of these problems are easy to fix, while others require a special tool from a professional. Here are some troubleshooting tips:

  1. Check the window safety lock-out switch. If the lockout switch is pressed, then the windows won’t go up and down. I would check this first because it’s the easiest fix.
  2. Check the fuses. If none of the windows roll up or down, check the fuses. Replacing any blown fuses and then trying and rolling up the windows again. I would recommend not using a bigger fuse. Try and use the same size amps.
  3. Push the window button up or down and listen. If you hear anything inside the door then the switch is working. This means either the window motor is bad or the regulator is bad.
  4. I would try the other switches. If the passenger side works, then you might need a new switch on the driver side door.
  5. You can try and swap the switches. The switch has a power and ground wire.
  6. Check the power of the switch/motor. You can use a multi-meter to check the power of the switch or motor.

These are just a few things to try and if it doesn’t work out. The next step would be to take it to a professional.

What’s the Importance of Keeping Your Window Up?

You will find that it may not be obvious that your window being down is a bad thing. However, there are some negative items to having your window down all the time. We are going to take a look at those items now.

  1. It will not be as appealing to the eye if your window is down all the time. A sagging window will continue to go down as you continue to drive with the problem.
  2. It is not safe. Having a window open at all times makes you more subject to theft. Someone can get into a car very easily if the window is down. If it is an older model car, people can hotwire vehicles and steal them.
  3. You will find yourself with a wet seat if you do not keep your window up. Rain can enter through the windows and make your seats very wet. This can cause mold and other issues if not taken care of properly.
  4. The last thing that can happen is that pests can come in. An open window is an open invitation for all pests to come in.

Temporary Solutions

There are temporary solutions and more permanent solutions. Below will be more cost-effective ways to fix your problem if you don’t have the extra money. These are the temporary fixes:

  1. You always hear the saying, if duct tape can’t fix it, nothing can. That is true here, to an extent. You can use duct tape to help keep your window up or patch a broken area on a window. Keep in mind that this will leave residue on the window itself.
  2. Try using a suction cup. This is a very easy process that you can do. You can make sure that your window is fully rolled up. Once this is done, you will simply put a suction cup at the top of the window. You will want something attached to the suction cup so that you can connect the string inside the car to a fixed structure. One of the best places in the bar on your visor. This is a strong area for the rope to be attached.
  3. One thing you can do is utilize plastic. You can put plastic over the area where the window would be if you cannot get the window to stay up. You will want to ensure that you are using see-through plastic material. This is something that should not be used long-term. This is a very temporary solution.

Permanent Solutions

There are a few permanent solutions that you can look into as well if you are sick of using temporary solutions.

  1. The first thing is to go to a mechanic. However, this is going to be more expensive because they are going to charge labor and parts.
  2. Sometimes the problem is that your window is loose. This means that all you have to do is slam your door a little harder than you normally would. It is a fun fix and who doesn’t love slamming the occasional car door?
  3. Last, you have to fix it yourself. If you are mechanically inclined, you can fix it at home yourself. Make sure you know what you are doing before you attempt this. If you can do it at home, you are saving yourself labor costs, which are expensive.
