How do you remove timing chain on 2.2 Chevy cavalier?

Timing Belt/Chain Replacement

This procedure provides the instructions to replace 2005 Cavalier (VIN-X) 2.2L Ecotec with timing cover chain cover chain and guides.

Caution: When installing camshafts make sure the oil passages face rear of engine.

-Disconnect negative battery cable

-Drain engine of coolant if water pump replacement also required. See: Draining and Filling Cooling System .

-Install camshaft locking fixture J 45462 and crankshaft holding tool J 39590 . Rotate crankshaft slowly clockwise until tool engages (camshaft locking pin enters slot behind front cam bearing caps),

-Remove bolts (1 in each cap) holding both front and rear lower timing (belt/chain) covers/tensioners. Slide off front cover assembly and rear (fixed and spring tensioner portion and idler gear if belt and cam gear if chain driven). If the timing chain drive, there’s a plastic (cam gear guide-2.2L ) to remove with cover.

>Caution: Do not lose cam gear guide .

Remove all bolts from both cam bearing assemblies that secure them to head .

-Slide new lower cam bearing cap gasket into position

-Install bearing caps and bolts to hold on head but tighten bolts snug only. DO NOT tighten at this time,

Caution: Be very careful if a timing belt drive engine to not allow a cam cap/valve spring compressor tool assembly to slip off or drop into front cover oil pump area while removing bearing cap bolts as this will entail complete engine disassemble in front timing area to retrieve dropped compressor.
