Necessary Tools:
1. Replacement alternator (matching your car's specifications)
2. Set of wrenches and sockets (including 15 mm, 13 mm, and 18 mm sockets)
3. 10 mm ratchet and extension
4. Screwdriver
5. Pliers
Instructions:
1. Safety First:
Before starting, ensure the Malibu is parked on level ground with the engine off and handbrake engaged. Wait until the engine cools down. Disconnect the negative terminal of the car battery to prevent any electrical accidents.
2. Remove Engine Cover:
Open the hood and locate the engine cover. Remove the cover by lifting it up and releasing it from its mountings.
3. Locate the Alternator:
The alternator is usually near the top of the engine on the passenger side. It has several electrical connections and a belt around it.
4. Disconnect Battery Cables:
Follow the positive cable from the battery to where it connects to the alternator's B+ (or "BAT") terminal. Loosen the bolt and remove the cable using pliers. Repeat this for the other cable connecting the alternator's F (or "FLD") terminal to a voltage sense connection.
5. Remove Alternator's Belt:
Locate the tensioner pulley near the alternator and insert a 15 mm wrench into the square hole. Press on the wrench while pushing a breaker bar or long, sturdy extension into the pulley's hole to loosen the belt. Once loose, remove it by taking it off the pulleys.
6. Unplug Electrical Connectors:
Disconnect the electrical connectors on the back of the alternator by pressing on the release tabs and gently pulling the connectors out. Take note of the wiring if disconnecting multiple connections.
7. Remove Mounting Bolts:
Loosen and remove the mounting bolts securing the alternator using the 13 mm socket and ratchet. There are usually two or three bolts.
8. Slide Out Alternator:
Carefully maneuver the alternator out of the engine bay by moving it back and forth while pulling it towards you. Be cautious not to drop any hardware or damage surrounding parts.
9. Install New Alternator:
Slide the new alternator into place and reinsert the mounting bolts, but don't tighten them yet.
10. Reattach Belt:
Place the belt back onto the alternator and tensioner pulleys. Use the wrench and breaker bar to tighten the tensioner pulley until the belt is taut.
11. Reconnect Cables:
Reattach the electrical connectors and battery cables that were disconnected earlier, ensuring the positive cable goes to the B+ terminal and the other cable goes to the F terminal. Tighten the bolts of these connections.
12. Tighten Mounting Bolts:
Tighten the mounting bolts that hold the alternator in place.
13. Reconnect Battery:
Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
14. Start Car and Test:
Start the car and let it run for a few minutes. Check for any warning lights on the dashboard and listen for any unusual sounds or vibrations. If all seems well, turn off the engine.
15. Replace Engine Cover:
Place the engine cover back and secure it by fastening its mountings.
Congratulations, you have successfully replaced the alternator in your 2004 Malibu. Remember, if you are unsure about any step, it is best to consult with a professional.
