1. Tools Required
- Socket wrench set
- Screwdriver
- Pliers
- New Neutral Safety Switch
2. Raising the Vehicle
Raise the vehicle with a jack or lift to gain access to the transmission pan.
3. Locating the Switch
Look under the vehicle for a black or brown switch attached to the transmission housing near the shifter linkage. This is the neutral safety switch.
4. Disconnecting the Wiring
Disconnect the electrical harness from the neutral safety switch. Use the screwdriver to pry up the tabs on the connector and pull the connector off.
5. Removing the Switch
Use the socket wrench to remove the bolts holding the neutral safety switch in place. Pull the switch out of the transmission housing.
6. Inspecting the Switch
Inspect the switch for any obvious damage or wear. If the switch is damaged or worn, it will need to be replaced.
7. Installing New Switch
If the switch is still good, clean it with a wire brush and reinstall it. If the switch is damaged or worn, install the replacement switch.
8. Tighten Bolts
Tighten the bolts holding the switch in place.
9. Connect Wiring
Reconnect the electrical harness to the neutral safety switch. Make sure the connector is clicked in securely.
10. Test Switch
Start the vehicle and shift through the gears. The vehicle should not be able to start unless the transmission is in Park or Neutral.
11. Lower Vehicle
Lower the vehicle and dispose of the old switch properly.
