Part 1 of 3: Removing the Old Sensor
1. Disconnect the negative terminal cable. This will disable the power supply to the vehicle and prevent any electrical shock while you work. Start by locating the negative terminal cable which is usually black and marked "NEG" or "-."
* Use a wrench or socket wrench to loosen the nut holding the cable to the battery terminal.
* Pull the cable off the terminal and set it aside.
2. Remove the transmission oil pan. This will provide you with access to the speed sensor located inside the transmission. Position a drain pan under the transmission oil pan to catch any fluid that may leak out.
* Unbolt the transmission oil pan bolts using a wrench or socket wrench. Be ready for some transmission oil to drain out!
* Remove the transmission oil pan and set it aside.
3. Locate the speed sensor. It is usually positioned on the side of the transmission near the oil pump. The speed sensor is a cylindrical-shaped device with an electrical connector.
4. Disconnect the speed sensor connector. Press the release tab on the connector and pull it straight up. Set it aside.
Part 2 of 3: Installing the New Sensor
1. Install the O-ring. Lubricate the new O-ring with a drop of transmission fluid and place it into the groove on the speed sensor. Make sure that the O-ring is seated properly to prevent transmission fluid leaks.
2. Screw in the new sensor. Hand-tighten the speed sensor until it is snug. Do not overtighten the sensor as this can damage the threads. Tighten the sensor with a 17 mm wrench only 12-15 ft/lbs.
3. Reconnect the speed sensor connector. Plug the connector back into the speed sensor until it clicks into place. Make sure that the connector is fully seated to avoid any electrical problems.
4. Replace the transmission oil pan. Reinstall the transmission oil pan and tighten the bolts securely.
5. Reinstall the negative terminal cable. Connect the negative terminal cable back to the battery terminal and tighten the nut securely.
Part 3 of 3: Testing the New Sensor
1. Fill the transmission with fluid. Check the transmission fluid level and add fluid as needed.
2. Start the engine. Test-drive the vehicle and check for any leaks. Ensure the speedometer is working correctly.
Tips
* Make sure to drain the transmission fluid before removing the oil pan. This will prevent any unnecessary spills.
* Be careful not to overtighten the speed sensor as this can damage the sensor or transmission housing.
* Test-drive the vehicle to ensure that the new speed sensor is functioning correctly.
