How do you replace the heater control valve on a 96 Honda Passport?

Parts Needed

* New heater control valve

* 5/16-inch socket

* Ratchet

* 10-inch extension

* Pliers

* Drain pan

* Coolant

* Funnel

* Rags

Instructions

1. Allow the engine to cool completely.

2. Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.

3. Open the hood and locate the heater control valve. It is usually located near the top of the engine, near the firewall.

4. Disconnect the heater control valve. There are two hoses connected to the heater control valve. Use a pair of pliers to loosen the hose clamps and remove the hoses.

5. Drain the coolant from the heater control valve. Place a drain pan under the heater control valve to catch the coolant. Open the drain plug on the heater control valve to allow the coolant to drain out.

6. Remove the heater control valve. Use a 5/16-inch socket and ratchet with a 10-inch extension to remove the bolts that hold the heater control valve in place. Remove the heater control valve.

7. Install the new heater control valve. Install the new heater control valve in reverse order of the steps above. Tighten the bolts that hold the heater control valve in place until they are snug.

8. Fill the coolant system. Fill the coolant system with the recommended type of coolant. Use a funnel to add coolant to the radiator or coolant reservoir.

9. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check for leaks around the heater control valve. If there are any leaks, tighten the bolts that hold the heater control valve in place until the leaks stop.

Note:

- Be sure to dispose of the old coolant properly. Coolant is a toxic substance and should not be poured down the drain or on the ground.

- If you are uncomfortable with any of the steps in this guide, you can have a qualified mechanic replace the heater control valve for you.
