Park the vehicle and allow the engine to cool down. Engage the parking brake.
Locate the power steering pump. In the 1998 Chevy Malibu, it is usually mounted on the front of the engine, near the top.
Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent any electrical accidents.
Remove the power steering pump reservoir cap and drain the fluid into a suitable container. Once most of the fluid has been drained, reconnect the reservoir cap.
Locate and loosen the power steering pressure hose from the pump. Use a wrench or socket to loosen the hose fitting and then carefully remove the hose.
Repeat step 4 for the power steering return hose. Loosen the hose fitting, remove the hose, and secure the open hose ends to prevent fluid leakage.
Locate and loosen the bolts or nuts that hold the power steering pump in place. Remove these fasteners and then carefully remove the pump from the vehicle.
If necessary, remove the old gasket or O-ring from the pump mounting surface and replace it with a new one.
Replace the power steering pump into the vehicle and reinstall the mounting bolts or nuts. Tighten these fasteners securely.
Reconnect the power steering pressure and return hoses.
Refill the power steering reservoir with new fluid.
Start the engine and allow it to run for a few minutes. Check for any leaks and ensure the power steering system is functioning properly.
Reconnect the negative battery cable.
