1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and turn off the engine.
2. Open the hood and locate the clutch cable bracket on the transmission. It is usually a black or silver bracket located near the top of the transmission.
3. Loosen the locknut on the clutch cable bracket using a wrench.
4. Turn the adjusting nut on the clutch cable bracket clockwise to tighten the clutch cable or counterclockwise to loosen the clutch cable.
5. Tighten the locknut to secure the adjustment.
6. Start the engine and test the clutch pedal. The pedal should feel firm and have about 1 inch of free play before it engages.
7. If necessary, repeat steps 3-6 to make further adjustments to the clutch cable.
Here are some additional tips for adjusting the clutch on a 1996 Nissan Altima GXE 5-speed:
* If the clutch pedal feels spongy or does not engage smoothly, the clutch cable may need to be replaced.
* If the clutch pedal is difficult to depress, the clutch release bearing may be worn out and need to be replaced.
* If the clutch pedal engages too high or too low, the clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder may need to be adjusted or replaced.
