Tools and Materials Needed:
- Lug wrench
- Car jack
- Jack stands
- Socket set
- Flathead screwdriver
- Brake cleaner
- New brake rotors
- New brake pads (optional, but recommended to replace when replacing rotors)
Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle
- Park your Montero Sport on level ground and engage the parking brake.
- Loosen the lug nuts on the wheels where you're replacing the rotors but do not remove them completely.
Step 2: Raise the Vehicle
- Use the car jack to raise the front or rear of the vehicle, depending on which rotors you're replacing.
- Place jack stands under the frame of the vehicle for safety.
Step 3: Remove the Wheels
- Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheels.
Step 4: Remove the Caliper
- Locate the brake caliper on the side of the rotor. It's held in place by two bolts.
- Remove the caliper bolts and lift the caliper off the rotor, taking care not to damage the brake line.
- Hang the caliper securely out of the way with a piece of wire.
Step 5: Remove the Old Rotor
- Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the two phillips screws that secure the rotor to the wheel hub.
- Remove the rotor from the wheel hub.
Step 6: Clean the Wheel Hub
- Use a wire brush to clean the wheel hub surface where the rotor sits.
- Remove any rust or debris.
Step 7: Install the New Rotor
- Place the new rotor on the wheel hub.
- Insert and tighten the two phillips screws to secure the rotor in place.
Step 8: Reinstall the Caliper
- Lower the brake caliper back onto the new rotor.
- Reinstall the caliper bolts and tighten them securely.
Step 9: Repeat for the Other Side (if applicable)
- If you're replacing both front or rear rotors, repeat steps 3 to 8 on the other side.
Step 10: Brake System Inspection
- Check the condition of your brake pads. If they are worn or have less than 1/4 inch of material left, it is recommended that you replace them at this time.
- inspect brake fluid level and add if necessary.
Step 11: Test the Brakes
- Once the rotors are replaced, slowly lower the vehicle off the jack stands.
- Test the brakes by applying them gently. Ensure they feel firm and responsive.
Step 12: Test Drive
- Take the vehicle for a short test drive to ensure the brakes function properly.
Remember, if you're not confident in performing this task, it's best to have it done by a qualified mechanic. Safety should be your utmost priority when working on a vehicle.
