To deactivate 4x4 on a BMW Z3, follow these steps:

1. Start the engine and allow it to idle for a few minutes.

2. Press and hold the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) button until the yellow "DSC OFF" light appears on the instrument cluster.

3. Shift the transmission into neutral.
