1. Make sure the engine is cool and the car is parked on a level surface.
2. Locate the oil filter housing on the left (driver's) side of the engine. It is a black cylindrical canister with an "OIL FILTER" label on top.
3. Place an oil drain pan under the oil filter housing to catch any oil that may spill.
4. Use an oil filter wrench to loosen the oil filter housing. Turn the housing counterclockwise until it comes loose.
5. Remove the old oil filter from the housing. Be careful not to spill any oil.
6. Apply a thin coat of new oil to the gasket of the new oil filter.
7. Screw the new oil filter into the housing until it is snug. Do not over-tighten the oil filter.
8. Replace the oil filter housing cap and tighten it until it is snug.
9. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check for any leaks around the oil filter housing.
That's it! You have now successfully replaced the oil filter on your 2001 VW Jetta GLX VR6.
