Tools and Materials Needed:
- Jack and jack stands
- Lug wrench
- Socket wrench set
- Torque wrench
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Brake caliper grease
- New brake pads
- Brake cleaner (optional)
Procedure:
1. Prepare the Vehicle:
- Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
- Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down.
- Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels, but don't remove them completely.
2. Raise the Vehicle:
- Use the jack to lift the front of the vehicle until the wheel you're working on is off the ground.
- Place a jack stand under the vehicle for safety.
3. Remove the Wheel:
- Remove the lug nuts completely and take off the wheel.
4. Remove the Brake Caliper:
- Locate the brake caliper, which is the assembly that houses the brake pads and piston.
- There are usually two bolts holding the caliper in place. Use the socket wrench to remove these bolts.
- Once the bolts are removed, carefully lift the caliper off the brake rotor.
- Be careful not to let the caliper hang by the brake hose. Use a piece of wire or string to support it if needed.
5. Remove the Old Brake Pads:
- The brake pads are located on either side of the brake rotor.
- Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry the brake pads out of their slots.
6. Clean the Brake Caliper and Rotor:
- Before installing the new brake pads, it's a good idea to clean the brake caliper and rotor.
- Use a brake cleaner to remove any dirt, debris, or old brake pad material.
7. Install the New Brake Pads:
- Position the new brake pads in the slots on the brake caliper.
- Make sure the pads are seated properly.
8. Reinstall the Brake Caliper:
- Carefully lift the brake caliper back into place over the brake rotor.
- Secure the caliper with the bolts you removed earlier.
- Tighten the bolts to the specified torque using a torque wrench.
9. Reinstall the Wheel:
- Place the wheel back on the vehicle and reinstall the lug nuts.
- Tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to ensure even tightening.
10. Lower the Vehicle:
- Use the jack to lower the vehicle back to the ground.
- Remove the jack stand.
11. Test the Brakes:
- Pump the brake pedal a few times to seat the new brake pads.
- Take the vehicle for a slow test drive to ensure the brakes are working properly.
