You will need the following tools and materials:
* Oil filter wrench
* New oil filter
* Clean oil pan
* 10mm wrench
* 17mm wrench
* Funnel
* 2 1/4 quarts of BMW Motorrad engine oil (SAE 20W-50)
Instructions:
1. Warm up your engine for at least 5 minutes at idle then turn off the bike and let the oil warm 10 minutes.
2. Place an oil pan under the bike to catch the old oil.
3. Remove the oil drain plug (17mm wrench) to drain the old oil.
4. Replace the oil drain plug and remove the oil filter.
5. Wipe off the sealing surface of the oil filter mounting surface on the engine case.
6. Add a light coating of new oil on the rubber seal of the new oil filter.
7. Screw the new oil filter onto the bike until snug.
8. Add 2 1/4 quarts of BMW Motorrad engine oil to the bike through the oil fill hole (10mm wrench).
9. Start the bike and let it run for a minute before checking the oil level with the dipstick (10mm wrench). The oil level should be between the two marks on the dipstick.
Primary Drive Lubricant Change
You will need the following tools and materials:
* 10mm Allen wrench
* New o-ring for the drain/fill plug
* Clean oil pan
* Funnel
* 100 ml Primary Drive fluid (BMW Original Primary Drive Fluid #83 21 0 157 022)
* Thread sealant (Loctite 574)
Instructions:
1. Place the bike on the centerstand or with the rear wheel off of the ground.
2. Place the oil pan under the bike to catch any old lubricant that may leak when removing the drain/fill plug.
3. Remove the primary drive drain/fill plug (10mm Allen wrench) and allow the old lubricant to drain into the oil pan.
4. Replace the drain/fill plug with a new o-ring.
5. Apply a thin coat of Loctite 574 thread sealant to the threads of the drain/fill plug.
6. Tighten the drain/fill plug until it is snug.
7. Remove the fluid reservoir sight glass and replace with a funnel if you choose.
8. Add 100 ml of primary drive lubricant to the bike through the reservoir fill hole (funnel).
9. Check the oil level in the reservoir and ensure that it is between the two marks.
Tips:
- Ensure that you use BMW Motorrad engine oil and BMW Original Primary Drive Fluid.
- Change the oil and primary drive lubricant every 6,000 miles.
- If the bike is used in dusty or dirty conditions, change the oil more frequently.
