Why wont my Sears riding lawn mower shut off?

Possible causes and solutions:

1. Faulty Ignition Switch: Check the ignition switch. If it's damaged or malfunctioning, it may not be properly disengaging the engine when the key is turned to the "Off" position. Replace the ignition switch if necessary.

2. Defective Safety Switches: There are several safety switches on a Craftsman riding lawn mower, such as the seat switch, brake switch, and PTO switch. These switches are designed to shut off the engine when certain conditions are met, such as when the operator leaves the seat or disengages the PTO. Verify that all safety switches are in proper working condition and make necessary replacements if any of them are defective.

3. Sticking Throttle Cable: Inspect the throttle cable for any obstructions or damage that could prevent it from fully closing when the throttle lever is released. Ensure the cable moves smoothly and is not tangled, kinked, or frayed. Make adjustments or replacements if needed.

4. Fuel System Issues: If the carburetor is flooded or there is excess fuel in the system, it could prevent the engine from shutting off properly. Check the fuel lines and components for leaks or obstructions, and ensure the fuel system is operating correctly.

5. Electrical Problems: A faulty electrical component, such as a short circuit or a malfunctioning relay, might bypass or interfere with the ignition system's normal operation. Conduct a thorough electrical inspection to identify and fix any electrical issues.

6. Incorrect Engine Adjustments: Ensure that the throttle adjustment (carburetor adjustment) is set correctly according to the lawn mower's user manual. Incorrect adjustments could impact the engine's ability to idle and shut off properly.

7. Engine Mechanical Issues: In rare cases, the problem could lie within the engine itself, such as damaged components or excessive wear. If mechanical issues are suspected, it's recommended to consult a certified professional for further diagnosis and repair.
