1. Preparatory Steps:
- Make sure the motorcycle is in “Neutral.” Ensure the engine has sufficiently cooled.
- Remove the seat to gain access to the ignition coil covers positioned over the cam chain adjuster covers.
2. Remove Ignition Coil Covers:
- Remove the four bolts holding each coil cover (four covers total).
- Set the coil assembly and coil covers aside.
3. Checking and Adjusting:
- Turn the ignition key to the "On" position (without cranking the engine), causing the cam chain to become tensioned.
- Remove the black caps on the cam chain adjuster covers (one cover per cylinder).
- Use a flat-head or Phillips-head screwdriver (check the service manual for the correct screwdriver type) to slightly loosen the lock nuts on the cam chain adjusters.
- Slowly turn the cam chain adjusters clockwise (tighten) until you feel a slight resistance.
- Back the adjuster slightly until the resistance disappears, effectively removing any slack in the cam chain.
4. Tightening Lock Nuts:
- Hold the cam chain adjusters in position while using the screwdriver to firmly tighten the lock nuts.
- Reattach the plastic caps to the cam chain adjusters.
5. Recheck Tension and Final Assembly:
- Turn the ignition key to "Off" and then back to "On" to re-tension the cam chain.
- Perform the cam chain adjustment procedure again to ensure proper tension has been achieved.
- Reinstall the ignition coils and coil covers.
- Put the seat back on.
Remember to refer to the specific service manual for your 1982 Honda CB900F for detailed instructions and specifications regarding cam chain adjustment.
