- Funnel
- Wrench
- Clean rags
Instructions:
1. Prepare the car:
- Park the car on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
- Allow the engine to cool down if it has been running.
2. Locate the oil drain plug:
- The oil drain plug is usually located on the bottom of the oil pan.
- It can be identified by a rounded shape and a bolt head.
3. Place the oil drain pan:
- Position the oil drain pan directly under the oil drain plug.
- Ensure that the pan is large enough to catch all of the draining oil.
4. Loosen the oil drain plug:
- Use the wrench to loosen the oil drain plug.
- Be careful not to drop the bolt into the oil pan.
- Allow the oil to drain completely into the pan.
5. Remove the oil filter:
- Locate the oil filter. It is usually a cylindrical-shaped object near the top of the engine.
- Use the wrench to loosen the oil filter.
- Be careful not to spill any oil when removing the filter.
6. Apply a thin coat of new oil to the gasket of the new oil filter:
- This will help to create a seal and prevent leaks.
7. Screw on the new oil filter:
- Hand-tighten the new oil filter until it is snug.
- Do not overtighten the filter, as this can damage the gasket.
8. Replace the oil drain plug:
- Screw the oil drain plug back into the oil pan.
- Tighten the plug securely to prevent leaks.
9. Add new oil to the engine:
- Use the funnel to add the recommended amount of new oil to the engine as specified in your owner's manual.
10. Check the oil level:
- Use the dipstick to check the oil level. The oil level should be between the "full" and "add" marks on the dipstick.
11. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes:
- This will help circulate the new oil throughout the engine.
12. Recheck the oil level and top up if necessary:
- Use the dipstick to check the oil level again. If the level is low, add a small amount of oil until it reaches the "full" mark.
13. Clean up and dispose of the old oil and filter:
- Properly dispose the used oil and filter in accordance with local regulations.
14. Reset the oil change indicator:
- Refer to your owner's manual to find out how to reset the oil change indicator on your BMW.
Note:
- If you are uncomfortable performing any of these steps yourself, it is recommended to have the oil change done by a qualified mechanic.
