Tools and Materials Needed:
- Flathead screwdriver
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Pliers
- Snap ring pliers
- CV joint grease
- New CV boot kit (includes CV boot, grease, and clamps)
- Wire brush
- Clean rag
- Jack and jack stands
- Wrench set
Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle
- Park the Audi A4 on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and chock the wheels.
- Jack up the front of the vehicle and support it on jack stands.
Step 2: Remove the Axle Nut
- Locate the axle nut on the wheel hub.
- Use a wrench to loosen and remove the axle nut.
Step 3: Disconnect the Tie Rod End Ball Joint
- Locate the tie rod end ball joint on the steering knuckle.
- Use a pry bar or ball joint separator to disconnect the ball joint.
Step 4: Remove the Brake Caliper
- Remove the two bolts holding the brake caliper in place.
- Hang the brake caliper out of the way with a zip tie or wire.
Step 5: Remove the Brake Rotor and Hub Assembly
- Remove the two bolts holding the brake rotor to the hub assembly.
- Pull the brake rotor off the hub assembly.
Step 6: Remove the Driveshaft
- Remove the four bolts holding the driveshaft to the CV joint.
- Carefully pull the driveshaft out of the CV joint.
Step 7: Remove the Old CV Boot
- Use a flathead screwdriver to pry off the old CV boot clamps.
- Remove the old CV boot from the CV joint.
Step 8: Clean and Inspect the CV Joint
- Clean the CV joint thoroughly using a wire brush and a clean rag.
- Inspect the CV joint for any damage or excessive wear.
- If the CV joint is damaged, it will need to be replaced.
Step 9: Apply Grease and Install the New CV Boot
- Apply CV joint grease to the CV joint splines and inside the new CV boot.
- Stretch the new CV boot over the CV joint and secure it with the new clamps.
Step 10: Reassemble the Driveshaft
- Reinsert the driveshaft into the CV joint and secure it with the four bolts.
Step 11: Reinstall the Brake Rotor and Hub Assembly
- Place the brake rotor back onto the hub assembly and secure it with the two bolts.
Step 12: Reattach the Brake Caliper
- Reattach the brake caliper to the steering knuckle using the two bolts.
Step 13: Reconnect the Tie Rod End Ball Joint
- Reconnect the tie rod end ball joint to the steering knuckle.
Step 14: Install the Axle Nut
- Reinstall the axle nut onto the wheel hub and tighten it securely.
Step 15: Lower the Vehicle
- Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle.
Step 16: Verify for Correct Installation
- Start the vehicle and test drive it to ensure CV boot is properly installed.
