Note: Before you start, make sure the ignition is turned off and the car engine is completely cooled down.
1. Remove the Cigarette Lighter Trim Panel:
- Gently pry the trim panel around the cigarette lighter using a flat-head screwdriver or a plastic trim removal tool.
- Be careful not to damage the surrounding trim or console.
2. Disconnect the Cigarette Lighter Socket:
- Once the trim panel is removed, you'll see the cigarette lighter socket.
- Gently pull out the socket by gripping the plastic housing and rocking it back and forth until it comes loose.
- Be careful not to damage the wires connected to the socket.
3. Disconnect the Wiring Harness:
- Identify the wiring harness connected to the cigarette lighter socket.
- There may be a small tab or clip holding the connector in place.
- Press the tab down or release the clip to disconnect the wiring harness.
4. Remove the Cigarette Lighter Assembly:
- Unscrew the mounting screw that secures the cigarette lighter assembly to the dash.
- The screw may be located on the side or bottom of the assembly.
- Once the screw is removed, you can pull out the entire cigarette lighter assembly.
5. Install the New Cigarette Lighter Assembly:
- Insert the new cigarette lighter assembly into the dash and align it properly.
- Screw in the mounting screw to secure the assembly.
6. Reconnect the Wiring Harness:
- Plug the wiring harness back into the new cigarette lighter assembly.
- Make sure the connector is securely in place.
7. Test the Cigarette Lighter:
- Insert a cigarette into the lighter and press down.
- Check that the lighter heats up and illuminates properly.
8. Reattach the Trim Panel:
- Snap the trim panel back into place around the cigarette lighter.
- Press firmly to ensure it is secure.
That's it! You should now have successfully replaced the cigarette lighter in your 2002 Volkswagen Passat B5.
